Liposuction in volves the removal of fat from the body through the use oa a suction device. In traditional liposuction, small, thin blunt-tipped tubes (cannulas) are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin. Fat is suctioned out through the cannulas as the doctor moves the cannula around under the skin to target specific fat deposits. In recent years, doctors who perform liposuction have improved on the traditional technique to make it safer, easier, and less painful.

Liposuction is generally performed as an outpatient procedure in your doctor's office or hospital. It usually does not require an overnight hospital stay unless a large volume of fat is being removed. Be sure to ask questions and discuss all aspects of the procedure before agreeing to have it done. The doctor may use anesthesia. Again, confirm with the doctor everything that is planned, so you will know what to expect.
